For admissions tutors PQA will minimise the guesswork they must resort to now

For admissions tutors, PQA will minimise the guesswork they must resort to now. Overall, it should increase applications to top universities and the intake of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.Second, I am glad the report is recommending a trial of the US-style SAT. When it comes to top universities, state school students are the real victims of the admissions system. State school students, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, are flagrantly underrepresented at the top dozen universities.

Based on their A-level performance, 3,000 more (10 per cent of the intake) should be admitted each year. For the Sutton Trust - a charity that I chair, which provides educational opportunities for students from non-privileged backgrounds - there is much to welcome in this review, but there are two recommendations I believe to be of particular importance. The recommendations in this week's Schwartz report on university admissions could prompt a revolution in higher education. It contains the seeds of an admissions system that is more transparent, more professional and, most important, fairer for students. This policy could alienate more students than it converts because it is so unrealistic.

It could mean more student unions disaffiliating from the NUS, and add to the union's financial woes.. The election last week of a left-wing president to the National Union of Students who is unconnected to the Labour party could mean more unrest on campuses. Kat Fletcher, who is a socialist and founder member of the Campaign for Free Education, is opposed to all fees, not just top-up fees, and believes in direct action to stop them. She also advocates the return of a full grant for all students. A hallmark of the institution has been its liberal-mindedness and openness. The first vice-chancellor always took his meals in the cafeteria with everyone else. This gives the university a cosy, intimate feel, and helps first-year undergraduates to feel at home.In 2003, the university celebrated its 40th birthday, attracting 80 of the 230 original students back for an anniversary dinner.
