The Ritblat dynastic ambitions at British Land ended yesterday when Nick Ritblat announced he was quitting the £4.3bn family firm founded by his father 35 years ago. Mr Ritblat, 43, is standing down from the board at the end of this month although he will remain on the group's payroll as a consultant for a further 12 months. "Mobile users don't think twice about using their handset to call friends and family in the UK but until now would never have had the confidence in price to call abroad from a mobile," Mr Dewhurst said.In a further effort to expand its presence in the mobile phone market, Tesco is to start selling its services through its Metro retail base, giving it much wider high street distribution. So far Tesco Mobile has been limited to about 550 supermarkets but it will now be rolled out initially to 60 Metro stores.. This was launched in September 2003 with calls being carried on the O2 network.

Its Family tariff, which includes foreign calls and is internet enabled, charges 20p-a-minute for voice calls and 10p for texts. It also offers calls to a customer's three favourite numbers for half price. The company extended its tariffs yesterday to include a number of foreign countries in its UK call tariffs. Tesco entered that market yesterday with its Value tariff offering calls and texts in the UK only.Mr Dunstone is expected to react today by slashing the prices on his Fresh tariff in half, lowering voice calls to 7.5p-a-minute and texts to 2.5p each. Andy Dewhurst, the chief executive of Tesco Telecoms said: "Customers want a UK talk and text service but what they don't want is hidden charges and vouchers that expire."At the beginning of this year, Tesco said it had 500,000 mobile phone customers using its Family tariff mobile phone service. Tesco is to carry out its threat of extending it Value range of rock-bottom prices into the mobile phone market in a direct move against Stelios Haji-Ioannou's easyMobile and Carphone Warehouse's Fresh service. Tesco's move prompted Charles Dunstone, the Carphone Warehouse chief executive, to promise an immediate cut yesterday in his company's tariffs from today, which will substantially under cut Tesco. "We will be cheaper than them.

Argyll Partners, which was set up last year, advised Baugur on its acquisition of Mk One from Philip Green.. Fears that it would be stuck with the cost of closing MVC was one factor behind Apax Partners' decision to drop its £837m offer for Woolworths. The retailer said the sale would reduce its working capital at its wholesale arm, Entertainment UK, which supplied MVC, by up to £10m. "The disposal removes a loss-making business from the group and allows us to be solely focused on our retail business," Trevor Bish-Jones, Woolworths' chief executive, said.Mr Steed said he "looked forward" to getting his hands on MVC's 76 stores. Like most retailers MVC relies on Christmas to make money.Analysts were relieved that Woolworths had managed to find a buyer for the chain, which had attracted little interest from trade buyers because the sites are located in out-of-the-way places.
