We flew to Greece and we were playing in Athens, and I called this tune we almost never play .. the audience goes crazy - 6,000 people just going crazy. After the gig, I ask the promoter what it was all about, and he says, `Don't you know? That's the music from the J&B commercial, the most popular commercial in Greece.'"As we're flying from Greece to Spain I'm telling the story to someone, and the plane begins to land, and one of my songs comes on the sound system. I say to the stewardess, `That's me playing the saxophone,' and she looks at me like `You asshole', and says, `We play that every time an Iberia flight lands.' I come back to New York, and I get a call from a friend of my mother's who tells me the Walker Art Center is showing my Lounge Lizards concert film. The Walker Art Center is where my dad used to work, but I have no idea about the deal.

Then, 10 minutes later, a friend in France calls to say he's watching my Fishing With John show, which isn't even finished yet, on TV."I'm starting to really freak out, so I go to a friend's place in Long Island to relax, and we turn on the baseball game and they're playing my music on a commercial for Macy's, which I also don't know about. Then I find out the fishing show has been sold all over Europe, all of my work has been sold from one person to another. That's why I disappeared for so long, because I just went to lawyers and accountants every day for two years. I've started a record company, but now I'm doing business all day long instead of doing music.

I've started to write a book called What Do You Know About Music, You're Not a Lawyer?, which is kind of a halfway autobiography."Lurie is now trying to sell the Fishing With John series to European television stations, including Channel 4. The problem is that the series has already been sold to them, they've just not been able to show it. Promoted and trailed but never actually screened, it has attained legendary status. The series consists of six episodes, each forming a record of a fishing trip undertaken by Lurie with one of a cast of star guests including Tom Waits, Dennis Hopper, Willem Dafoe, Matt Dillon and Jim Jarmusch, and was financed by Japanese television. The more good deeds you did, the softer would the infant effigy lie. The only catch was, if you told anybody about your good deed, your straw was void. "Patricia and I had a competition to go out and do something nice for someone," she recalls, without embarrassment. "You'd find an old lady and go clean her house for her."Thus are altruists born.
